Zest - The Secret of Happiness and Success

The philosopher Bertrand Russell found it appropriate to devote an entire chapter of his book 'The Conquest of Happiness' to the subject of 'Zest'. This life-enriching quality he claimed was 'the secret of happiness and well being'. It's the ingredient above all others that gives life its sparkle, gaiety and ebullience. It's the bubbles in a glass of champagne, the icing on the cake, the yeast that leavens the loaf. Without zest life is like a meal without relish - insipid and dull. Originally the term related to the flavouring derived from the peel of lemons, but now it's more commonly used to describe the spice of life.

Little that's worthwhile in life is achieved without zest. It's the charismatic quality that attracts friends and influences people. Under its dynamic influence we find the drive to overcome the obstacles which stand between us and our goals. This was recognised by Ralph Waldo Emerson who wrote: 'Nothing great is ever achieved without enthusiasm.' Yet, strangely enough, we're trained from childhood onwards to 'play it cool.' We're taught to fight shy of activists, even though they're invariably the one's who get things done. Through their passionate commitment to outside causes they're the ones who are most likely to achieve success and who are most truly masters of their own destiny. If we want to attain our full potential, and extract the maximum enjoyment from life, we must reject the habit of dull, stultifying conformity, and learn to live with passion. This was the firm belief of the French philosopher who wrote: 'Le seule morale est de vivre avec ferveur'. (The only principle is to live with passion.)

Zest is vitality in action. To develop it, we must banish our timidity and set out every day to seize with both hands the excitement and opportunities that life affords. Even in our seventies and eighties we must not give in, but continue to live with passion and zeal. At this time of life we should constantly bring to mind the rallying cry of Dylan Thomas:

Do not go gently into that good night, Old age should burn and rage at close of day; Rage, rage against the dying on the light.'
